Established April 2020
Cove Boatyard opened it's doors in April 2020 and it's a story of coming full circle back to our roots. Our roots started in 1979 in Maple Bay when Phil and Alexandra Pidcock purchased Cove Yachts 1979 Ltd. Phil and Alexandra emigrated to Canada after Phil finished his Shipwrights apprenticeship at Hillyards Boatyard in England in the late 1960's. Phil and Alexandra operated Cove Yachts in Maple Bay for 35 years and semi-retired in 2013 to spend time more time on their Forest Service boat Alpine Fir and time racing vintage cars.
Phil and Alexandra's oldest son Simon worked the summers in the boatyard as a teenager while racing sailing dinghies competitively. In 2003 Simon started his four year Marine Repair Technician apprenticeship at Cove Yachts while simultaneously starting a Whale Watching and Marine Eco Tourism company operating out of Cowichan Bay. Simon was fortunate enough to grow his marine eco tourism business into one of the most reputable marine ecotourism businesses on the coast and left the family boatyard to focus solely on marine ecotourism in the early 2000's.
In March 2020 COVID-19 pandemic reached Canada and British Columbia's tourism sector crashed due to international borders shutting down and Transport Canada mandating marine eco tourism businesses closed to ensure social distancing. Faced with the prospect of losing his job and potentially his business of 17 years Simon approached Phil and Alexandra and hatched a plan to start operating the family boatyard in Maple Bay reopening as Cove Boatyard and coming full circle back to his roots in the family marine industry.
